Description

Dexamethasone is indicated for use in situations in which a rapid adrenal glucocorticoid and or anti-inflammatory effect is indicated.

Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid with approximately 25 times the anti-inflammatory potency of naturally occurring cortisol. Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone are important in normal protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism and for their role in controlling inflammation.

Administer

For intravenous use in horses only. The usual intravenous dosage is 2.5 to 5 mg as the initial dosage in shock and shock-like states followed by equal maintenance doses at 1-, 3-, 6- or 10-hour intervals as determined by the condition of the patient.

If a permanent corticosteroid effect is required, oral therapy with dexamethasone tablets may be substituted. When therapy is to be withdrawn after prolonged corticosteroid administration, the daily dose should be reduced gradually over a number of days, in a stepwise fashion.

Prescriptions are non-refundable. Prescriptions are refillable if indicated by your vet, for up to one year from the original date. At the end of one year, prescriptions must be updated. Written prescriptions must include the veterinarian's license number, telephone number, and address. Federal law restricts the use of Rx drugs to use by, or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
