Dexamethasone is indicated for use in situations in which a rapid adrenal glucocorticoid and or anti-inflammatory effect is indicated.
Dexamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid with approximately 25 times the anti-inflammatory potency of naturally occurring cortisol. Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone are important in normal protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism and for their role in controlling inflammation.
If a permanent corticosteroid effect is required, oral therapy with dexamethasone tablets may be substituted. When therapy is to be withdrawn after prolonged corticosteroid administration, the daily dose should be reduced gradually over a number of days, in a stepwise fashion.
