Description

The HayGain HG2000 and HG600 Hay Steamers provide horses with clean, healthy forage by using high-temperature steam to eliminate dust, mold, and other harmful particles from hay. Each unit features an insulated, wheeled chest designed to deliver consistent steam penetration from the center of the bale outward for even, thorough results.

Available in two sizes, the HG2000 accommodates a full bale, while the HG600 holds half a bale. Haygain’s unique steaming method ensures the hay reaches and maintains the high temperatures required to kill fungal spores, mites, and bacteria, effectively sterilizing the forage while preserving its nutritional value. The result is fresh, aromatic hay that supports respiratory health and promotes better palatability for horses.

FAQ

How do I use the Haygain?
Each Haygain steamer comes with a detailed manual covering setup, operation, and long-term care. To steam hay, connect the boiler, unit, and hose, then fill the boiler with water and load the unit with hay. Plug in the boiler and switch it to the steam setting. As the steamer operates, it thoroughly heats and moistens the hay, reducing dust and bacteria while enhancing palatability for your horse.

How long does steaming take?
Most steaming cycles run about 50–60 minutes, though the exact time can vary. Factors like the temperature of the water, the weather, and the power source can all influence how long the unit needs to reach full steam. In colder conditions, it’s normal for the cycle to extend up to around an hour and a half.

Should I use distilled water?
No, you do not use distilled water in a Haygain steamer; the manufacturer specifically recommends using clean tap water, as the minerals in tap water are essential for the unit's water level sensors and optimal function, while distilled water can actually cause issues like overfilling or wet steam and can void the warranty.

How much water will be used?
Each steaming cycle uses roughly 4.5 liters of water. A portion of that water is absorbed into the hay, helping bring it closer to its natural moisture level, typically adding about 15% or more to its original weight. The rest is released as steam when the unit is opened, and a small amount drains out through the base. For comparison, soaking hay requires significantly more water, often between 60 and 80 liters per use.

Don’t hesitate for your asthmatic horses!

Haygain steamer is the best! I have an asthmatic mare and being able to steam her (and her herd mates) hay was life changing! So much better than washing or soaking. The goats love the steamed hay too! A whole winter went by with no asthma flares! Definitely worth it.

EXPENSIVE BUT SO ARE VET BILLS

I have a horse who maybe once a week would have the deep hacking cough. It would stop when he hacked up a huge wad of sputum. Then all would be normal until the next time. He was put on Zyrtec 40 tabs daily with no change. No other symptoms. This went on for 2 years. Bought a HAYGAIN and it all stopped. An added important bonus for me is that the temperature of the HAYGAIN also kills the parasites that can cause EPM.

Love the HayGain steamer! My horse needs to be on a lower quality hay, and using the HayGain every day makes the first cutting so much more palatable for him. Very easy to use, and the team at FarmVet was fantastic in helping me with my order.
